Because this eventually ends up as a song lyric, I put this under Poetry…
The idea behind this arose when I considered how humankind has progressed and what it did. Specifically, as its evolution moved along and it learned about tools, it learned about the benefits of having a thumb and sort of crafted one, if you will, through many lifetimes. In order for the front paws to do what they seemed inclined and positioned to do, that one little finger had to move over so we could grasp things. ‘Nuff said on that…
So, it seemed to me once upon a time, if we’re a species that can take a part of our body and adapt it to our needs, then we can do that with another part of our body. Specifically, we shaped the thing that uses tools so we could use those tools more effectively. In that sense, if we did the same thing with our minds it would enable us to more easily grasp the tools of the mind – other ideas, or our own.
It seems we need thumbs for our heads.
I sense a bounce in the phrase, “Thumb for My Head” and so I eventually crafted some tiny lyrics for it.
I also had a visual. A very simple visual. A guy with a big thumb on his head. And I was talking about the general idea to Mandy, whose husband Neil is an illustrator, and he agreed to a brief sketch. I use this now as an icon on Twitter:
